What’s the difference between this and BLM/1?

BLM/1 is the isolated version. It protects the PC from any power surges on the RS485 bus and isolates it from potential ground potential differences, which are the most common cause of damaged serial ports in industrial environments. In industrial environments, the isolated serial port is the safest choice.

 

Can I use this to configure a RS485 device?

Yes, that’s one of the most common uses. However, it can also be used to establish continuous communication with a fieldbus.

When is a USB RS485 converter needed?

Modbus and other protocols

Versatility

This USB RS485 converter is also available with an RS485 serial interface isolated up to 560 V, with other combinations of serial standards, or with different connectors. The BLC/1 and BMC/1 converters, for example, use 3-pin Mini XLR connectors, with isolated and non-isolated RS485, respectively. BTS/1 and BTV/1 feature synthetic or glass fiber optic connectors to provide additional isolation from electromagnetic interference.

The BFM/1 and BFC/1 industrial serial converters operate with the RS422 standard, featuring either removable terminals or 5-pin Mini XLR connectors. All combinations of serial standards, fiber optics, and power supply options are available in the catalog; however, special requests (such as higher data rates) can be made via the contact form.
