POF\/2HD is a dual-channel multimode synthetic optical fiber<\/a> with rodent-resistant protection, featuring core and cladding diameters of 1.0 mm and 2.2 mm, respectively. It is mainly used in industrial environments due to its immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and its electrical insulation properties. It can easily achieve the transmission speeds required by common industrial serial communication standards, up to 250 kbps. RS485, RS232, and RS422 typically do not require high communication speeds in industrial applications, as they prioritize stability and robustness.<\/p>\n

In networks subject to heavy electromagnetic interference, which is common in industrial environments, it is good practice to install two or more optical-to-electrical converters connected by an optical fiber link to ensure signal integrity. There are also environments in which electrical equipment is prohibited, such as swimming pools, saunas, and buildings at risk of fire, where the use of optical fiber becomes essential.<\/p>\n

The protective outer jacket makes the optical fiber suitable for underground installation and may be necessary for outdoor installations or more complex operating conditions. In critical applications where communication cannot be interrupted, it is advisable to use synthetic optical fiber protected against accidental damage. The thick outer jacket provides additional protection, including in the event that falling objects could damage the optical fiber. When this level of protection is not required, the dual-channel POF\/2<\/a> synthetic optical fiber is available without rodent-resistant protection.<\/p>\n

Single-mode or multimode<\/h4>\n

Single-mode optical fibers are used for high-speed transmission applications, reaching speeds of several Gbps, but they have several disadvantages compared with multimode fibers. For example, they allow only small bending radii, require extremely precise termination, and are very expensive. Multimode fiber, on the other hand, supports lower speeds but is more affordable and flexible from an installation perspective. For example, standard workshop tools are sufficient for termination, while the converters use convenient screw connectors suitable for manual installation. A few simple precautions can also be taken to reduce signal loss and improve communication quality.<\/p>\n

Single-mode optical fiber can only be made of glass, which certainly offers several advantages, primarily the maximum achievable speed and the longer transmission distance. However, the speeds required in industrial environments, which are often only a few tens of kbps, can easily be achieved using plastic fiber. For this reason, multimode synthetic optical fiber made of plastic is often the more convenient choice for industrial applications and building automation.<\/p>\n

A single synthetic optical fiber link can cover approximately 100 metres, which is sufficient for most indoor and outdoor applications. For longer distances, such as a backbone connection between two separate buildings, glass optical fiber is recommended. It can cover distances of several kilometres, although it must be professionally terminated.<\/p>\n

Rodent-resistant synthetic optical fiber<\/h4>\n

In more demanding environments, several problems can be prevented by using rodent-resistant synthetic optical fiber. The durable outer jacket protects the fiber against accidental damage that could cause communication interruptions. Standard optical fiber usually has only a simple outer covering, and damage to this covering can result in communication errors. For example, sunlight can enter the optical fiber through a cut or chipped section of the covering and interfere with communication.<\/p>\n

Use cases<\/h4>\n

POF\/2HD rodent-resistant synthetic optical fiber is multimode and can be used in combination with optical-to-electrical converters and repeaters such as CMM\/1S<\/a> and TSS\/1M<\/a>, which are suitable for RS485 communication. These are industrial converters designed for DIN rail mounting, as are the CRM\/1S<\/a> and TSS\/1F<\/a>, which use RS232 and RS422 communication standards.<\/p>\n

For connection to a PC via USB or a DB9 connector, the BTS\/1<\/a> and DFP\/9S<\/a> are recommended, respectively.
